Discuss Darwin’s concept of natural selection from On the Origin of Species (868-877).

Respond in no less than ten/more than twenty sentences. Use at least two quotations from your primary source (s) and any cited critical information you feel necessary.

1. Discuss William Blake (“The Chimney Sweeper” 79 and “Holy Thursday 80) from Songs of Innocence and Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus (from “Chapter 5” and “Chapter 7” 574-579) as social critics.

2. From Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus, explore the “tragedy” of the monster’s existence in terms of feelings, intellect, need for belonging in conflict with his exclusion from society and abandonment by his creator. Feel free to refer to the video on Mary Shelley and to explore science’s experiment which ironically became human.

3. Analyze John Keats “Ode on a Grecian Urn” (536) and relate its theme of frozen time and “negative capability” to a specific photograph of you. Two short videos will be helpful: Ode on a Grecian Urn, You Tube (Atlantic Poetry Guild) and Ode on a Grecian Urn and Negative Capability (You Tube).

4. Discuss Darwin’s concept of natural selection from On the Origin of Species (868-877). Two  videos which are insightful are the following: Origin of Species by Charles Darwin 2/13 and 2/5, (with Richard Dawkins, University of Oxford), methinxaweezil.
